Updated June 2 2023 --- see below On this site we will be posting information about Thrifty car rental that is located in the Mitsubishi dealership in Owen Sound Ontario, Canada. In the spring of 2023 my son rolled the rental car from Thrifty. My wife was happy that she had used her credit card to pay for insurance. We knew we would loose the $500 deductible.
She got her statement and noticed a huge fee was taken out. We asked Thrifty and they said it was to pay THEIR deductible. They also said we should have known about the hidden fine print that they did not tell use about. We are not happy and will be looking into this. I will provide more details and keep you posted on the results. If you have advice or comments please e-mail me in the form below.
I am not sure what will happen with this mess.
Also: last year we bought a new Mitsubishi . We love the car but I no long want to go to this dealership because of their affiliation with Thrifty. Update 5 June 2 2023 We had a call from an insurance company. They wanted all our information. Looking at the contract they determined they were not responsible to pay. Thrifty had our son initial a box that said they did not have to pay. The insurance company was quite confused and said they would contact Thrifty and try to find out what is going on. The insurance company was sympathetic and kind.
Update 4 May 27 2023 My son It looks like it will be four weeks before we know the progress. Thrifty car insurance My son did not have car insurance so he bought the Thrifty car insurance package. Now we find out it might not be real insurance. I will post details as I get them. Credit card problem They gave us a receipt that said it was for damages without providing us any details. Why is there a damage charge when the car is a right-off and insurance should pay for everything? All we know is that the card was maxed out. More details to come I hope.
Update 3 This is what the credit card company told us to do To xxxxx xxxxxx, Thrifty xxxxxx xxxxxxx Manager, Owen Sound. I am informing you, that I do not give Thrifty car rental, Owen Sound any further authorization to access money from the credit card xxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Our business relationship has ended with xxxxxxxxx. Please confirm that you received this e-mail. xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx
Update 2 The girl at the deck told me that the large fee was to pay for their deductible. When my wife went in the next day the paper said it was for damages. I am quite confused because we did not rent the car.
Update 1 I learned an expensive lesson. On a pre-authorised payment for damages always go to the the credit card company and put a limit on it. We did not do this with Thrifty. The credit card company said we had approved the amount but we did not. We thought it was for $500 but turned out to be an amount that almost maxed out our card. Thrifty did not let us know until we inquired about what this amount was for. We did this on a trip to Cuba. The credit card was declined. Then the resort realised they put in the wrong number and it was approved.
